The St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District has named its 2017-18 District Students of the Year.
The 12th Grade District Student of the Year is Glasia Walker. The 8th Grade District Student of the Year is Michael Reeves and the 5th Grade District Student of the Year is Teryn Davis.
12th Grade District Student of the Year
Eighteen-year-old Glasia Walker is a student at West St. John High School.
She is active in 4-H, DECA, Beta Club, National Honor Society, the Superintendent’s Council and is a cheerleader.
“When selecting a student you must select someone who can be a role model for current and future students. Glasia Walker is that person.,” Principal Claude Hill said. “I would have to say that she stands out among her peers in grades, behavior and overall attitude.”
After graduating in May, Glasia plans to attend Jackson State University to pursue a degree in biomedical engineering.
“I want to be a biomedical engineer to participate in important research and experience the thrill of discovering new things,” she said.
8th Grade Student of the Year
Michael Reeves, 13, is a student at John L. Ory Communication Arts Magnet School.
He is involved in the STEM club, book club, Beta and Student Council and lists math and science as his favorite subjects. He also participates in drumline and choir.
“I like to keep busy,” he said. “I like to be involved in a lot of things.”
Principal Christal Sylvain described Michael as a model student.
“He’s intrinsically motivated,” she said. “He does it because he cares about doing well, not because anybody made him do it.”
5th Grade Student of the Year
Teryn Davis, 10, is a student at Lake Pontchartrain Elementary School.
She is a member of the Rotary Club at her school and loves English language arts and math.
“I love math because it helps with numbers, which you need for everything, and ELA helps with language so you speak better,” she said.
Outside of school, Teryn is involved in dance.
Principal Jason Beber said Teryn is a perfect choice for District Student of the Year because of her commitment to learning not only for herself but for others.
“She loves to learn and is very motivated. She always has a book in her hand,” Beber said. “She also goes above and beyond to help out other students in the classroom. She will even help kids at lunchtime if they need it.”
