Z benchmark scores good evening everyone I want to give you a quick update on our Benchmark data for through December 2017 so on your table you have to hand out in front of you one is a colored hand out and one is black and white hand out I'm going to start with the colored hand out and just kind of talked about some of our sister results so that first table in front of you shows How are district performance score will be calculated at the end of the year and the dad I'm going to show you tonight really speaks assessment index in grades 3 through 12 that's going to comprise about half a bar District performance score at the end of the year so this is a significant part of our scores but by all means it's not you know the all of our score that we'll see at the end of the year so are benchmark scores are benchmarks are assessments that we give on a quarterly basis to really stimulate you're testing in the leap and the EOC and we roll up the data and really the same way we roll it up at the end of the year and so we have data through for the first quarter in the second quarter and I'm going to kind of go the district highlights and then you can look at some of the school-level data and and look at that in a in a more detailed way so on the second page of your hand out you have a couple tables there that that go over where we're at in terms of our big District goals that we set is a district so if you can read across the table there that first row that's highlighted in percent of students scoring mastering above on end-of-year state assessments you can see where we started the year at 21.9% of our students were scoring Mastery or bump based on our first quarter Benchmark assessment we had on that assessment scoring Mastery orb of our second quarter benchmark test we had 37.7 scoring Mastery above so we've seen an increase over the course of this year and what we from previous years is that really one of the best predictors of how were actually going to be no fair due at the end of the year is taking the average of all of our benchmark assessments so if we take the average to date of all of our benchmarks give throughout the year we are 34% Mastery and that that represents a growth of 12.1% in students scoring Mastery based on these benchmark assessments so that is obviously very good news that that were looking at based on this data that exceeds are are gold at mr. George said at the start of the Year 10% Mastery to this point 10% growth and students scoring we're both so that is very very positive news based on this data and the second table down at the the bottom of your page that's the assessment index so it's really the same thing what song across that that yellow row and based on where we're at to this point the year weird that we're seeing a growth over where we started of 7.5 so that's very good we are meeting our goals in all of the all the areas that we set with the exception of math where we're seeing growth but not to the to the point of reaching our goal so that's where we're at the district is a whole you can kind of see the subject by subject breakdown on a couple highlights I want to give you in the black and white packet there is school level data see you again what I want to point out and looking at each of our individual schools is that you know we see some positive things there obviously we see 7 out of 10 schools are showing an increase in their assessment in saw 7 out of 10 10 of our schools are showing throat to this point in the year and 4 out of 10 of the schools are at an increase of at least 10% in the number of students scoring Mastery are above that's a overview and I'll pause right here in and I'll be glad to take any questions you might have about this Jones going back on your first bullet your green and gold assessment here on your second what you K to 12 assessment at the bottom I know she said we're up 12.1% positive District goes 10% increase dear what was the goal of the district is going at the bottom I noticed we're up 7.5% the assessment index was 52.5 we are currently at an average 56.2 okay I'm sorry I thought you were through okay so looks like to meet at I will kids in St John Parish or real are moving forward look like we doing we doing the right thing with the right direction in St John Parish I would you would you say that message or Netflix one of the things that you know we we pride ourselves on here in St John is that weed we never satisfied with where we are you know we our team I District team our teachers maintenance staff everyone is pitching in to make sure that we received the growth you know we'd we meet we collaborate with one another and we make sure that teaching is happening in the classroom and we think and we know from the results of our Benchmark assessment that that we are reaching kids and kids are learning so as evidenced by here you know I guess I'd be remiss but not pointing out bed and you know here in late this is one of The Shining examples of what happens when everyone works together you know the school he was recognizing top game school around the state of being one of the top 10 schools in this entire state so we're pushing forward but we're not and we have a long way to go but we getting there thank you sir Mister muscella doctor it is March 19th is the date that will conclude and will be finished scoring a week after that so around the end of March so we want to make sure that the parents about Community aware of the very very happy. Yeah what we do make every efforts of have make-up  with a student misses but attendances are as important just in General Tso just a couple things because unfortunately we don't have a a PowerPoint here so these folks can see this I just want attention to a couple of very important numbers the first to get the send the first graph you showed us our objective in growth this year was I appreciate it though well I'm trying to find it now the objective in in Grosse the atmosphere above was to improve 12% is that correct and we actually are improving right now and have improved to 12% okay and then toward the end of this year we're anticipating a growth of 31.9% almost 32% growth in mastery is that correct the 31.9% that's the level we want to be at that's not the growth I understand that cuz it says 39.9% or 31.9% and so that's actually the The Point store yes that's the level we want to be at and currently our average is a 34% and we want to be at a 31.9% so we're actually well ahead of the goal and I was going to mention something with the superintendent just mention them that is in spite of the problems that has had the face over the last couple of years 3 years and 10 months I think if I'm not mistaken this school still tends to be one of our high-performing schools it has grown almost 10% in scores over last year and Spike of being displaced from the actual school and having to attend class and trailers tell my compliments to to all of the students of the faculty in the parents of Lake Pontchartrain well. And just eat what's your immediate goals in terms of the remedy for the three schools that did not show any growth in the assessment index and I know we have less than 30 days to work on it I mean are our media goal some of those same schools are also ones that we saw a decline in last year so we have a plans for many of those schools in place and we are continuously trying to implement but you know like mr. George said we're at we're not satisfied by no school's not growing and this is really the final push before testing and we want some good morning what happened between an exact test dates are Philippe assessment they are in I don't have them off the top of my head I know you put them on the spot three weeks and it's more specific mrs. Sanders one of the things did we already committed to after we were looking at the 2nd of Benchmark second-quarter benchmarks was just a more attention to detail the what's happening in that classroom every single day even to the point where and I know a lot of principals and assistant principals really called out my name in vain and then some of these situations but we wanted to know where everybody was at every single point of the date want to know where are you spending your time and I want to make sure that that time was being spent in the classroom and helping teachers in the classroom so principal system principles Master Teachers I had to recommit to making sure that they schedule their schedules show the appropriate amount of time helping teachers and kids inside of the classroom and I must say that everyone stepped up to the challenge and and have schedules that that show that were inside the classroom teaching and learning is happening some people wonder why we're talking about this information right now we recently had to retreat in January and that just had to retreat we had the same information Benchmark testing is done throughout the year at least three times and it's the perverse to gauge where students are and where they need to be I'm saying everyone is familiar with the way Betsy is running right now dear would a lot of unfunded mandates you're making a student so what's happening right now at students some parents may be aware if a student right now in 2018 by 2022 they have to be achieving Mastery or Advanced so instead of waiting 3 or 4 years from now to the year before you're required to be in master in advance working towards that right now to make sure that our students in st. John Parish are on top and all ready to see to Mastery in advance so that was the reason for this discussion next item on the Serena Duke District support employee of the year and and keep it in line with the people who are making a difference in our schools and those who are making an impact on our students of course we want to recognize our support employees of the year each school has selected a support employee to work this year we did it a little bit differently and identifying a maintenance employee and also someone from milesville in addition to our bus drivers because we know that without them are schools would not function the way that they need to so we want to make sure that those people also feel appreciate it and recognize representing East Saint John High School Miss Ivy Snyder 12-month Clerk when your name is called please come to the front representing also our Union president Ms. Sean Pine was a paraprofessional for Emily C Watkins Miss Crystal Roberts paraprofessional for Fifth Ward Elementary Miss January Scott paraprofessional for Caryville Elementary Miss Brianna Sterling paraprofessional John L ory Miss Patty Schnyder paraprofessional LaPlace Elementary Miss Donna duplessis paraprofessional Pontchartrain Elementary Miss Lori hatala in Montclair 4 West Saint John Elementary head custodian the Beta convention so she couldn't be here. C's and we decide to do a rookie we've been doing a program to solicit more because we have such a shortage been working with us tirelessly she's now been hired permanently and she is our rookie bus driver of the Year mr. Sheila Howard and last but not least are permanent and Veteran bus driver of the Year Mr Ulysses Jarrell charity players of 2 minute recess opponent Vice of counsel going to ask mr. Rena Duke to come back and reiterate request was approved for the I teach program requires action 9 good afternoon again or approval of the IT program so can I ask you to speak up just a bit for whatever use your microphones turned down a little request of the I teach program for uncertified teachers Miss reduce if you don't mind can you give me a brief synopsis of what is the program and why we are initially initiating this time began looking at our population of uncertified teachers and realize that we have a relatively large number of teachers who are not certified and also understanding that there's a shortage of certified teacher we decided that we needed to do something to make sure that we have qualified people in our classrooms and also to support the people who are in our classrooms on the job to become certified with that in mind I did some research into some of the programs offered for uncertified teachers to help them to become certified and presented those two are bored we recommended the IT program because it is fully online it does not require teachers to go to a location to take classes the cost because they're not paying for transportation in this program they can become certified within one year they would complete 9 hours in the summer all online 6 hours in the spring and then 6 hours in the fall at the end of which time once they pass all prices test they will be certified teachers would that that cause being $4,500 per person we did present to the board that we were taking a quart of twin uncertified teachers who would have to apply for this program and then who would also intern work for us for a period of time after they become certified thereby reducing the number of uncertified teachers in our district if we continue the pro each year by 20 personnel misterwives. Thank you yeah I'll make the motion first and then I'll speak of how much is Elmo motion by misterwives II by Mr Sanders board members thank you sir Miss Duke is as I understanding please correct me when I'm wrong there is a national shortage of certified teachers these folks are qualified to be in a classroom but they're not certified in the area in which teachers at right yes sir so we might have an English teacher teaching a course that doesn't an English class people in their area of the garage so we will try to hurry English major to go into English but that person does not have a teaching certificate proactively in the process taking folks who want to be teachers and fully certifying them to be teacher St John high school graduate from Loyola University and his degree is not in education but he is teaching now and social studies over in in Austin Texas and he did it through a program like this and it's going to be a good way for us to benefit our own kids but it also produces more people who want to be teachers in the middle of their career to stay a person become certified teachers and so it's a win-win for everybody as I understand is that right so potential teachers you're looking to go into the field would definitely want to come into staying because we are offering this program and we're paying for it with the understanding that they are too completed with our money to do this okay thank you what's the commitment of these 20 Personnel that were taking on to become certified to Commitment after the application process but the initial commitment that we discuss was three and after they become certified they would remain with us for 3 years thank you I think it's a win-win for our district we showing our people that we are investing in and let you know that ain't we going to put the money out you go do what you have to do and you be certified teacher so I think it's definitely a win-win for the different a lot of positive feedback about does emotional does the motion need to be repeated not roll call dr. Felix Bolton introduction to Industrial tax exemption program resolution and policy on preparing Professional Service righteous take these two qualities on the executive committee and the finance committee are continuing to work to maybe make some revisions for the car taken under advisement for now administrative matters the only thing I like to say is you know what is is everyone's been watching the news since last week after the horrible incident down in Broward County I've been of students around the state cross the country been arrested for various actions words they said and really social media is also Fanning the Flames of a lot of the stuff that's happening is getting so bad out on social media that the state police actually had the issue I like to read that statement because I think it it it it goes to kind of where we the Day in 2018 the state police official statement today was although we highly encourage citizens to report suspicious activity you want to remind them that the increased sharing of unsubstantiated threats through social media the resources available to respond to and investigate these claims a state police set today the sharing of unsubstantiated threats through social media systems and further burden the facility and student body you know we also had our incident as well here last week and when you're you're trying to investigate a matter that it becomes very difficult when you don't instantiated things are forwarded and passed on as as truth of unaweep I've had many calls many emails from Friday through probably Sunday evening and what I told everyone that I communicate with was this is that we have to be right before we put out a statement on social media you don't have to be right and so if we are a little delayed is because we're being measured and we take a serious approach to anything we give a statement to the media or before we put something out on our own social media so I just want to encourage people absolutely please if you see something say something and we encourage him and I'll congratulate kids who do come forward to check out but I just thought it was you know what it is got until severe state where the state police is actually putting out statements of surrounding this so with that said you know we take security here in this District I'll seriously we work through through grants and I own general fund money to enhance security at all of us cool sites even before you know this incident happened and we're going to continue to do so so with that said I just like to appreciate you thank the community for working with us and for understanding where we are and where we are in this day in age with social media with threats and what school safety thank you Borderlands Adventures so I see several of them still out there are Color Guard from Troop 406 have particular affection for 406 I was the assistant scoutmaster for a number of years before rough became a member of the district committee and my son TJ is now the teacher got his Eagle Scout award at 4:06 and I'm very proud of you guys I assume you're still here to need a requirement for advancement is that right now okay.
